Big Companies Are Often More Diverse

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

In this blog series, the L2 Accent Reduction Centre asks if big companies are more diverse.

The old expression ” Great minds think alike.” ought to be changed to “Great minds think unalike.”  But in many companies, the idea of being different or standing out is often related to conflict.  It can be hard for a smaller company to have a diverse staff since the close-knit team of co-workers are more closed to working with differences.

That’s where being in a large company can be advantageous.  Unorthodox thinking and new approaches are often part of a large company’s overall culture.  In fact, your difference can often lead to reward and opportunity.

That said, in the hiring process, all companies are looking for the person who fits in the best.  In the hiring process, one needs to show as much as possible how much they are similar to the “typical” employee.  Unfortunately, it isn’t until your job is secure that you should begin to point out the attributes you have that qualify you as being a diverse hire.
