Stop Doing Paper TOEFL Tests – Here’s Why From Teachers

Monday, July 30th, 2012

Recently, one of my TOEFL students requested paper versions of the iBT TOEFL test.  I asked her why she wanted a paper test.  “You still have 4 more practice tests on your Edulang account.”, I said.  Usually, I only start handing out my paper tests as a last resort, when all possible computer tests are done.  In this case though, the student’s aunt did not think that computer tests were good.  The aunt worried that this student would use the computer to waste time talking to friends and playing games, instead of studying.  There wasn’t much I could do except encourage her to allow for the student to do online practice tests.  Unfortunately, this student prepared by doing 5 iBT paper tests and only one of the Edulang online iBT TOEFL simulations.  Her score was 83.

The unconscious skills needed for the iBT TOEFL are increased when you practice online and simulate the test conditions as best as you can.  The skills we use to read off of paper and off of a computer screen are different.  If you want to be sure of yourself on test day, practicing with the Edulang product is a big advantage.

Is Edulang a highly recommended program for students? Accent Reduction Specialists at L2 Accent Reduction Centre, agrees!

One of the best advantages for a student who is preparing for the iBT TOEFL is having the ability to practice with mock tests.  Sure, there are lots of strategies that a student can learn to read faster, improve vocabulary, structure their writing and so on.  But a mock test helps a student to identify their weak areas and also to learn from their mistakes.

A challenge for students is finding a mock test that is as authentic as the real test.  With so many TOEFL products out there, it is hard to know which mock tests are in fact too easy.  If you prepare with mock tests that are too easy, then you are sure to score low on test day because the material will be much more challenging than what you prepared for.

My favourite feature of the Edulang TOEFL product is that it is at the same level of difficulty as the real iBT TOEFL test by ETS.  When I  mark my students with their online system, both the student and I have a good idea of what the score will be when they take the real test.  That way, test day holds no surprises for either of us.
